The Gibbons Songbook

New Publication:

The Gibbons Songbook

The Hymn tunes of Orlando Gibbons realised for five voices (SAATB) and with the original words from Wither's Hymns. Nicholas Hale has recreated Gibbon's tunes for five voices (SAATB), a very popular setting in late Tudor/early Stuart times.

The Gibbons Songbook also presents some of the original verses by George Wither for which the tunes were first composed, together with the relevant extracts from the (then) newly published Authorised Version of the Bible which inspired Wither.

The result is a fascinating insight into the expectations of early 17th century churchmanship and church music. The tunes as set are well within the capabilities of competent parish choirs and offer an engaging alternative to the SATB arrangements to be found in most hymnals.

Available now from the Royal School of Church Music. How to order.
